Oman Adventure Press Release

Oman Adventure 2006 from 17 to 22 December
in the Jabal Akhdar

The second Oman Adventure race, for which reconnaissance has just been
completed, will take place in a totally different setting to the first year's
race. From 17 to 22 December, contestants will take on the largest mountain range
in the Sultanate of Oman, the Jabal Akhdar, whose highest peak stands at
3,000 metres.
The competition will take place between the sea and the mountains amidst
breathtaking scenery (badly needed breath at that!), leading contestants through
valleys to peaks and from mountain passes to canyons, with creative,
unexpected variations on the bike and run theme.
These variations will only be revealed at the last minute but we can assure
contestants that the aquarando (water hiking) course will not be technically
difficult but very impressive.
The mountain bike course will be highly varied and sometimes fairly
challenging with a few short sections requiring bikes to be carried. Certain
crossings will need to be made completely on foot.
Orienteering will be kept as simple as possible. You will only need to know
how to use basic GPS functions. The organisation is deliberately not marking
the course to avoid defacing nature.
In 2005, after a top-level contest, the Karine Baillet and Christophe Bignot
team won ahead of an Australian triathlete duo and an English adventure
sportsman and Omani triathlete pair.
For the second year of the race, there is continued interest from
triathletes along with adventure racing specialists and cross-country enthusiasts.
However, there are also very many newcomers among those competing for victory…
and the 6,000 euro prize money. These adventure and travel fans competing in
male, female or mixed teams will immerse themselves in the Omani landscape,
which absolutely must be explored.
The GFC competition registration fee is 600 euros per team. Sindbad–Voyages
is offering a Paris-Paris package for 1650 euros, including flights,
equipment, meals, 4x4 assistance, hotel and bivouacs.

New Adventure Racing Tow System

New Adventure Racing Tow system from We Go Team Link, can be used for walking/ trekking and running stages of adventure races. The system can be ordered as a complete set or individual components.

The system has been tested under race condions with the following conclusions

Towing system allowed the team to maintain a higher speed by assisting a member who is slower at an activity.
Both people took the role of tower during the event. In one case, a pair of people took on both roles with each other We conclude that the usefulness of this system is not limited to a "stronger" and a "weaker" person, but that in different circumstances or activities, an individual might take on either role, even within one team.
Test result (4) confirmed what I had assumed but not yet directly observed: that the team link allows the tower to exercise to exhaustion by imparting towing force to the towee.

The Race takes its toll

The first day of the Sabah Adventure Challenge had seen two retirements. The second day of racing in hot and humid 34C saw many teams struggling. A lot of the racing was near a river and competitors were advised to jump in to cool. The race started with a quick run from the overnight camp towards the Flying Fox and in the Adventure class, it was the third place team from Hong Kong who managed to gain a 20 minute minute lead over the the chasing team from Singapore. Yestersdays leaders made a navigation error which dropped them down to 4th plave but they retired later in the day when one of themsuffered a torn toe nail and damaged thier knee during the accent and decent of a hill.

The Extreme race is close the leaders holding a 30 minute lead over the chasing pack going into the second day. The course for them ended with a long mountain bike leg of 80 kilometes including the decent that the adventure teams took yesterday and which cuased a number of falls. after some seven hours of racing the teams still had a long way to go to reach the finish.
